M. JOSEPHINE YUEN, PH.D.
Dr. M. Josephine Yuen provides advisory services
to venture capitalist firms and startup companies in
the areas of telecom, semiconductors, materials and
nanotechnology. She brings 24 years of technical, corporate,
and entrepreneurial experience to her practice.
Dr. Yuen specializes in technical and operational due
diligence on potential and on-going private equity
investments, delineating the risks from development
to first revenues. She also supports the development
of deal flows and venture creation. To help startup
companies, she serves in interim executive management
roles, advising on fund-raising and organization development,
leading strategy, business and supplier development,
and charting the operational course from product development
to first revenues. She has worked with venture capitalist
firms in Silicon Valley, the East Coast and Texas,
and startup companies in California, New Jersey and
the United Kingdom. She is currently on the advisory
boards of Microwave Photonics, a wireless communications
spin-out of British Telecom that is located in Los
Angeles and the United Kingdom, and Valdor Fiber Optics,
a Silicon Valley micro-cap optical components company.
She is also a member of The Council of Technology,
Media & Telecommunications Advisors of the Gerson
Lehrman Group, an independent investment research firm
that provides the primary research to more than two
hundred top institutional asset managers.
Dr. Yuen worked in multiple optical telecom sectors
including transport & switching systems, subsystems,
components, fiber and materials. From 2001 to 2002,
she was the Chief Operating Officer of OptiMight Communications
and Siros Technologies, two optical telecom startups
in San Jose, CA. Previously, she spent nearly 22 years
at AT&T and Lucent Technologies, working in the
Optical Networking Group, Microelectronics Division
and Bell Laboratories. She was the Director of Product
Management of the Cross-Connects Portfolio from 1998
to 2000, Director of Product Development and Management
of Optoelectronics Products from 1996 to 1998 and Director
of Manufacturing for Submarine Lightwave Repeaters & Terminals
from 1995 to 1996. She also held director level positions
in business development, supply line management, and
organizational re-engineering.
Dr. Yuen holds a Ph.D. and M.S., both in Physical Chemistry,
from Cornell University and a B.S. in Chemistry from
Wayne State University. She was a Post-doctoral Appointee
at Argonne National Laboratories. She also has completed
many management courses, including the Smith Management
Program of Smith College. She holds two U.S. Patents
in materials processing and is the author of 10 technical
publications.
